Some actors/actresses are destined to become and remain fond memories in the eyes of their peers and fans. Their name and persona's attain legendary near mythical status because of an untimely death or a life of stellar personal integrity and struggle. On both accounts Geeta Bali was such an actress. Geeta Bali's dancing eyes and her animated, expressive face which mirrored her soul were her most outstanding features. Yet life was snatched away from this vibrant personality at an achingly young age of 35.

Geeta Bali was born in pre-partition Punjab as Harkirtan Kaur, she was a Sikh, her family moved to Bombay and were living in near poverty when she started to get breaks in films. She was an actress from the golden age (1950s) of Bollywood films who was immensely popular for her effervescent and endearing acting style that when an actress like Kareena Kapoor states that her favorite actress is Geeta Bali one should take note. Geeta Bali had done a few small-time dancing roles in pre-Partition Punjab in films like Badnami, before moving to Bombay where she was cast in Suhaag Raat (1948). Audiences related to her instantly and watched wide-eyed as she nonchalantly tossed her unconscious hero, Bharat Bhushan over her shoulder in a scene.

Soon, Geeta was inundated with contracts. She accepted most. She won raves even in supporting roles like in the 1949 Suraiya starrer Badi Behan and the Madhubala starrer Dulari. In 1951, she became a major star with Guru Dutt's first hit, Baazi (she went on to do three other films under his direction). Geeta played gangster's moll with a golden heart to Kalpana Kartik's conventional heroine. But Geeta played her role with such gaiety that hero Dev Anand divulges, "People came repeatedly to theatres to see Geeta's spirited dancing to Tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana de.

Shammi Kapoor entered her life when they worked in the quaintly named movie 'Miss Coca Cola' and 'Coffee House' together. On an impulse, Geeta played a small role of a man in Sharma's Shammi Kapoor starrer Rangeen Raatein. On the film's Ranikhet outdoor, Shammi and Geeta fell in love. and the twosome were hell bent on marrying each other

Geeta Bali married Shammi Kapoor on August 23, 1955 at 4 am in what for Bollywood has become the most romantic of storybook elopements and weddings, one that could be placed with ease into a Bollywood film. On the night of 23 August, Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali decided to get married that night. They went to the Banganga Temples, a famous site near Napean Sea Road, Bombay, which houses some 92 ancient Temples and the Pujari informed them that the Gods had retired for the night and that if they wished to get married that they should come back early morning at 4 o'clock. So they went back to the temple at 4.30 in the morning during a heavy downpour of rain, and the Pujari performed the ceremonial rites of Hindu marriage as they took the seven rounds around the holy fire and they were declared husband and wife, Geeta Bali was 2 years older that Shammi and he was not yet a popular movie star.

Geeta continued to work after marriage in a few films like Sohrab Modi's Jailor (1958),
where she won raves as a blind girl. With Shammi Kapoor turning into a huge star and the birth of her two children Aditya and Kanchan, she eased her workload.

The desire to do that one fulfilling role she would be remembered for prompted Geeta to attempt the production of a classic for herself. She started Rano, based on Rajinder Singh Bedi's famous novel, Ek Chaddar Maili Si, based on a widow's remarriage to her brother-in-law. Upcoming star Dharmendra played her hero.

Geeta, who had not been vaccinated for small pox, contacted the dreaded disease while shooting the film. The best care was rushed to her, but her fever apparently reached 107 degrees.

Geeta Bali passed away on January 21, 1965, leaving behind eight-year-old Aditya and three-year-old Kanchan in the care of a devastated Shammi Kapoor.
Her film career spanned from 1948 to 1965 with 70 films to her credit

- Gita Bali became a famous movie star after this movie directed by Kidar Sharma. She plays a suffering village maiden, who is delightfully unsophisticated. Bharat Bhooshan, who had earlier shot to fame as Bhakt Kabir was saved from starvation because of this movie. People wanted him to do more dhaarmik movies after kabiir and he refused, thus leaving him a very poor married man.

- The first Pakistani movie, terii yaad, (in Urdu) produced by Dewan Pictures, directed by Dawood Dewan, starring Asha Posley and Nasir Khan was released this year

She sang her first line in a chorus, "saavan aaya (3) re", from chunariyaa (1948), MD Hans Raj Bahal and lyricist Mulk Raj Bhakhari. She sang only the words, "bahanaa khush ho ke sagan manaaye". The other singers were Zohraa and Giitaa. Her first solo was, "hai.n mauj me.n apane begaane" in the movie raat kii raanii (1949), MD bahal and lyrics aarzuu lakhahnavii

- Kishore started his playback singing career with the solo, "marane ki duaayen kyun mangun" and a duet with Lata, "ye kaun aayaa re" for Dev in the movie ziddii (1948), The Ziddi duet was Kishore's first duet with Lata, they will sing 320 more duets. Kishore was not mentioned in the credits, but he played a gardener, who made several witty remarks to the audience. Once he helps Dev get out of a ditch and speaks to him. The ziddi songs are the only two songs he sang in 1948. In 1949, he sang 3, in 1950, 10, for a total of 15 songs in Platinum Decade.

- Uday Shankar made Ballet film Kalpana and got huge appreciation for his innovative and unique idea.
- S S Vasan made Chitralekha with a huge budget of Rs. 35 lacs and thus gave challenge to the film makers.

SYNOPSIS:- Suhag Raat (1948)

"Far Far away in a lonely valley...
Stood a lonely cottage...."

When Lajjo is at her deathbed, she summons her stepson, Rahu, so that he can look after her son, Beli. Rahu does attend her residence, just before her death, assists with the funeral and offers to take Beli with him and look after him. Rahu hires a hit-man named Jaggu and instructs him to kill Beli. Jaggu is unable to kill Beli, angering Rahu to no end. Rahu then pushes Jaggu and Beli from a cliff and hopes that they have met their respective ends.

Rahu then sets about to claim Lajjo's property, by hiring a man to pose as Beli. Months later, Rahu approaches a wealthy woman for her only daughter's (Parvati) hand in marriage. While Paro's mother approves of Rahu, Paro is in love with someone else. While her mother finds out that she is in love with a mere employee, she dismisses him, and make arrangements for her marriage with Rahu. Watch the suspense and the climax unfold as Rahu prepares to get married to Paro, with the assurance that no one can ever get in his way
